The New Face of Ebony Magazine

The April 2011 issue of 'EBONY' marks the debut redesign of the publication's iconic brand. The issue is now available on newsstands and hopes to cater to and reflect a new generation of readers.

"The new EBONY is the culmination of many conversations with our current readers to gain a better understanding of what they value, analyzing our competitive opportunities and harnessing the passion and talent of the editorial team that I am so proud to lead," said Editor-in-Chief Amy DuBois Barnett.

She has been working on implementing changes to the magazine since her start in May of 2010 and sought the help of the new Creative Director Darhil Crooks who joined from Esquire. With input from their readers and staff they've created a sleek and modern aesthetic. The new layout consists of a neutral color palate with pops of bright color in combination with traditional elements like the retro fonts.

The logo has changed from its original bold blocked, sans-serif letters to the new fresh basic 1920s Jazz-inspired font. The magazine also now has new sections including "Connect," which covers love and relationships; "Elevate," specializing in wellness and spirituality; "Achieve" covering business and wealth content and "Live" encompassing home, travel and food.

Rings of the Dead

DuPage County, Illinois prosecutors released Wednesday that a hospital worker, who was in dire need of money in order to pay off a cable bill, admitted to stealing two rings off the fingers of a dead woman he was taking to the morgue.

According to DuPage County Assistant State's Attorney Mary Cronin, the 37-year-old hospital employee stole the rings then pawned them. Tapley told investigators that he was in dire need of money in order to settle a mounting cable bill debt.

Cronin told a judge at Tapley's trial on Wednesday that at the funeral of the deceased woman, a family member noticed that the rings were missing and immediately notified authorities.

After an investigation that took several weeks, Tapley was arrested and the rings, valued at $3,000, were recovered.

By all accounts, Kayla Henriques, 18, and Kamisha Richards, 22, (pictured) were tight. So tight, that Richards threw a baby shower for her friend and was planning a first birthday party for Henriques' son, Alex.

But the young New York City women had a falling out over $20 less than a week ago, when Henriques asked her friend for the money to buy Pampers but used the money for other items.

Over the week, the feud moved to the Internet, where the women traded insults on Facebook through the weekend.

Then it all went tragically wrong. On Monday, Henriques confessed to stabbing Richards at Richards' home in East New York. Police found a kitchen knife at the crime scene and followed a trail of blood to Henriques' nearby home and arrested the young woman, said sources

Richards, a graduate of John Jay College of Criminal Justice, was awaiting her scores on the law school admittance test and hoped to start law school this fall.

Guess that "tough" act, ain"t all that! Rapper Remy Ma, will be doing her eight year stint.

The New York State Court of Appeals has upheld the conviction of Bronx rapper Remy Ma, following a 2007 shooting incident that landed her an eight-year jail sentence.

In July 2007, Remy Ma was arrested and charged for shooting her friend Makeda Barnes-Joseph in the abdomen, over a monetary dispute. She was sentenced to eight years in New York’s Rikers Island facility but later appealed the case under claims that jurors were not properly briefed before they turned over the guilty verdict.

I don't know if this information will help anyone in general, but as you know, I believe in people working, finding opportunites and being a contributing member to society (thank my grandma for that one, she grew up at a time when things weren't "handed" over to you). So I've done a little research and found a few places that acutally hire ex-cons/felons. Hope this helps someone towards rebuilding their future.

Marriott Hotels, AT&T, Publix and UPS. Publix is not here in Michigan, but I know I have "blogspot" friends from all over the US.

I'm doing a paper on felons re-entering the job force, and I have some helpful tips on what to write and what toleave out of your resume and helpful interviewing tips. Didn't know if you want/need that information, but let me know in the comment section and I will do a post on it

She meets a girl at the club and decides to surprise Derwin with some blindfolded threesome action but after he seemed to be enjoying the other girl a little too much, she kicks the girl out. See, this is an example of why sharing isn’t always caring.

I'm ready for some good movies and wonderful portrayal's of "black" families. I may have found what I've been looking for with, "Jumping the Broom". It looks as though it'll be just enough humor and seriousness to keep me enthralled.

Here's the trailer to the upcoming movie Jumping The Broom--where Megan Good plays the character "Blythe", opposite Paula Patton. It's about two very different families converging on Martha's Vineyard one weekend for a fabulous wedding.

The movie's release date is May 6, 2011. Mother's Day weekend.

Mayor Dave Bing is trying to save Detroit by offering incentives to lure residents back to abandoned neighborhoods.

One program offers $150,000 in housing renovation money and requiring only $1,000 down to police officers who are willing to relocate to the city. Another offers college graduates $2,500 to rent and $20,000 forgivable loans to buy properties.

Potential home buyers can choose from plenty of cheap or free homes, especially in the blighted neighborhoods of Woodward Ave. and Brush Park.

If you collect unemployment benefits, the rules have changed! And guess what, It's not in your favor!

In the past when states issued unemployment benefits, you received a paper check in the mail, or the funds were deposited directly into your bank account. But now roughly 30 states issue unemployment benefits on prepaid debit cards.

At first glance, this might seem like a great deal. The states save money by not mailing you a paper check. You receive benefits quicker since funds are deposited onto the card.

However, services that are typically free for debit card users (i.e. store purchases, confirming account balances by phone or having a transaction denied) can also cost extra fees. You are charged a fee for withdrawing money from an "out of network" ATM machine. You may be charged for every withdrawal after the first one -- up to $5 per withdrawal in some states. You may even be charged a transaction fee for using the card at a store.

*My suggestion....read "ALL" of the fine print. If not, you'll be out of benefits faster than you know it.*

In just a short of period of time, things have changed as a judge in Los Angeles has ruled in her favor, making it possible for her to travel to New York with her daughter, where Garry Marshall will be shooting the romantic comedy.

Instead of taking back the role that actress Katherine Heigl replaced her for, Berry will have a small part in the film.

Big Screen Tupac Biopic Underway..... big screen biopic on the life of slain rapper and legend Tupac Shakur has now been greenlit with Antoine Fuqua tapped to direct the film.

The film will chronicle the life and legacy of Tupac Shakur, including his rise to superstardom as a hip hop artist and actor, as well as his imprisonment and prolific, controversial time at Death Row Records, where he was steeped in the East coast/West coast rap war.

According to Moviehole.net, the film will also showcase his days attending the Baltimore School of the Arts as a teenager, to his decision to leave his mother's dead-end life behind and embrace the Thug Life in California, to his wild success as a rapper.

On September 7, 1996, Shakur was shot four times in the Las Vegas metropolitan area of Nevada. He was taken to the University Medical Center, where he died of respiratory failure and cardiac arrest on September 13.

Having known for several weeks that the 'Second Chance' singer was facing some challenges in regards to his sobriety, his label Geffen Records has now confirmed and issued a statement about DeBarge seeking treatment.

Singer Fantasia Burrino, has been tapped to play gospel music legend Mahalia Jackson in a biopic.

The feature film will be based on the 1993 book 'Got to Tell It: Mahalia Jackson, Queen of Gospel,' which recounts the life of the late American gospel singer, a civil rights activist who was also inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

She will portray Jackson on her journey from abject poverty in New Orleans to her rise as a global figure in gospel and early supporter of Martin Luther King, Jr. The singer died of heart failure and diabetes complications in 1972 at the age of 60.

Rent Payments Will Soon Be Added to Credit Reports: Timely Payments Will Build Credit. Consumers who struggle to build a solid credit profile may soon get a boost by simply paying their monthly rent on time.

Until now, only negative rental information would appear on a consumer's credit report, typically after a landlord sent the account to a collection agency. But the Experian announcement means millions of consumers can build and strengthen their credit by staying current with their rent.

"Given that one-third of the U.S. population rents, we felt it was imperative to reflect the true creditworthiness of those individuals who responsibly pay their rent," Brannan Johnston, vice president and managing director at Experian RentBureau, said in a news release. "We are thrilled to be industry leaders in this initiative, and look forward to providing this credit-building avenue to residents."

**Renters should take heed, though, as this will soon become a two-way street. Experian plans to report only positive data in 2011. But negative rent information, i.e., late payments, are likely to become part of the mix in 2012.

Halle vs Gabriel...this is not looking good

Looks like this is going to be really ugly! As I stated in a previous post, Halle Berry does not want Gabriel Aubry to have any custody (physical nor legal). She is going to do everything possible to deny him any custody. This is the update as of today:

Sources report that Aubry has called Halle the 'N' word, and routinely demeaned her with other vulgarities. Supposedly, he would also call her a "f**king b***h" and other expletives. And the vulgarities are not limited to face-to-face confrontations. There are vulgar text messages as well, states the site.

Aubry shot back with his own statement, via his attorney: "While Gabriel is disappointed in Halle's decision to falsely malign him publicly and for her own purposes, he refuses to be pulled into her dispute over a canceled film production," his rep said in the statement. "Gabriel also refuses to air their issues in the press as he believes this may ultimately harm their daughter. The fact is that Gabriel is a caring father who shares custody of Nahla."

*What's really going on? If what she says is true, then that means she was in a relationship with yet another man that downs her and was emtionally abusive. I don't think Halle went down that road again. But she knows that people will give Gabriel the *side eye* for her just mentioning it. *

Halle Berry is planning to take ex Gabriel Aubry to court to fight for custody of their 2-year-old daughter Nahla. The Oscar winner, 44, even cleared her schedule by pulling out of the star-studded flick 'New Year's Eve,' which is set to begin filming in New York City this week. (She's being replaced by Katherine Heigl.)

Her rep tells UsMagazine.com in a statement; "She has attempted to resolve these custody issues amicably with her daughter's father, Gabriel Aubry, directly, but given his lack of cooperation, Halle has no choice but to seek swift judicial intervention."

Behind her decision to head to court?

Though the twosome were often seen cordially co-parenting in the wake of their April split =- including a shared trip to Paris -- the model, 35, filed papers on Dec. 30 asking to be formally recognized as Nahla's father and to establish shared custody.

*From my sources, I heard that Halle was very upset that Gabriel had moved on and started dating. He was seen recently sitting next to Kim Kardashian at a basketball game. After that, Halle, did not want to allow Gabriel to see their daughter (she had asked him to date in privacy-not publicly).

I applaud Gabriel for going to court to set-up "joint" custody! If a mother uses their child as a pawn & decides if you can see your child depending on whom you date, etc., then yes, I guess a court does need to get involved. *
